Sports Writers protests sale of match tickets at the media stand

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana has noted with regret the decision of the Premier League Board to sell match tickets for portions of the Media Stand of the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra, during the 22nd week Premier League match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko on Sunday.

The implication of the decision is that media men, whilst performing their official duties will have to mix with soccer fans at the Media stand.

A statement from the secretariat of the Association said the move was dangerous and can put the lives of media men at risk in the course of their duty.

"The Association is surprised by this decision because of arrangements it has had with the National Sports Council (NSC) with regard to the Media Stand" the statement said.

SWAG last year entered into an agreement with the NSC over the sale of tickets at the media stand during matches, and it was agreed that the place will be reserved solely for the media in order to ensure their safety and security.

The Association, therefore, finds it strange that the PLB has decided to revive the practice of selling tickets to portions for the media stand to soccer fans.

"The inherent danger should not be lost on the PLB", the statement noted.

The Association reckons that the media stand takes as many as 600 people, and that the total number of media men might not be up to that number, but is of the opinion that once the place is designated for the media, that should strictly be adhered to.

It has, therefore, urged the PLB to shelve the idea of selling tickets for the Media Stand if they are interested in the safety and security of media personnel.

"The safety and security of the media must be guaranteed in order to ensure absolute protection and safety of media personnel at the stadium on Sunday and called on media personnel to kick against the decision."
