Stage set for AFC U-16 Championship India 2016 draw

New Delhi: Sixteen nations will learn their AFC U-16 Championship India 2016 opponents when the competition's official draw is held in Goa on Thursday.

The seedings during the draw will be based on the results of the 2014 edition in Thailand with hosts India to be placed as the top-seeds.

The sixteen countries will be divided into four groups of four teams and each will play a one-round league.

The top two teams in each group (eight teams in total) will qualify to the quarter-finals where the four winners will qualify to the semi-finals. The winners of semi-finals will advance to the final.

The top four ranked teams of this year's AFC U-16 Championship will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017. In the event that India finish among the top four teams, three play-off matches will be organised among the four losing teams of the quarter-finals to determine the fifth placed team that will qualify to India 2017.

The draw will be made from four pots (team ranking in brackets) as follows:

Pot 1: India (1st), DPR Korea (2nd), Korea Republic (3rd), Australia (4th)
Pot 2: Islamic Republic of Iran (5th), Malaysia (6th), Japan (7th), Uzbekistan (8th)
Pot 3: Thailand (9th), Saudi Arabia (10th), Oman (11th) Vietnam (12th)
Pot 4: UAE (13th), Yemen (14th), Kyrgyzstan (15th), Iraq (16th)
