The Bundesliga’s first ever female referee, Bibiana Steinhaus, has been handed her second appointment in the German top flight, taking charge of Mainz’s visit to Schalke on Friday night.

The 38-year-old police officer from Hannover made footballing history when she took charge of Werder Bremen’s 1-1 draw at Hertha Berlin on Matchday 3 to become the first female referee to take charge of a Bundesliga match, or any top-flight match in Europe for that matter.

Steinhaus is one of the most experienced female referees in football, having taken charge of Bundesliga matches for over a decade and international matches since 2005. In 2011, she refereed the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup between Japan and the USA.

The following summer Steinhaus took charge of the gold medal match at the 2012 Olympics in London between the same two teams. And last summer, she officiated the 2017 UEFA Women’s Champions League final between Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain.
