Stephen Adams named in Ghana squad to face Montenegro, Jordan Ayew returns

Published on: 24 February 2014
Stephen Adams is in Ghana's squad to face Montenegro

Home-based goalkeeper Stephen Adams has been handed a call-up to the Black Stars to face Montenegro in a pre-World Cup friendly match next week while John Boye and Jordan Ayew return to Kwesi Appiah's team after missing the two previous matches.

The 21-man squad for the match against Montenegro is dominated by players who are expected to make Kwesi Appiah's squad for the World Cup in June.

Top players Asamoah Gyan, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Kwadwo Asamoah, Andre Ayew, Abdul Majeed Waris and in-form Emmanuel Agyemang Badu are all part of the squad.

This shows that coach Appiah is set in his mind about which of his key players will go to the World Cup thus he will use the match against Montenegro to start his preparations.

The match will be played on 5 March in Podgorica at the City Stadium.

But there are still places in the squad to be filled which looks to have resulted in the call-up for a new goalkeeper to compete with Kwarasey, Fatau Dauda and Daniel Agyei for places in the squad.

Dauda and Agyei who play in the South African top-flight were left out while Kwarasey who is in top form in pre-season in Norway was included.

Aduana Stars goalkeeper Adams returns to the squad thanks to his excellent showing at the Africa Nations Championship last month where he steered the Local Black Stars to the final of the tournament in South Africa.

His form looks to have convinced coach Appiah that he deserves another chance to fight for a position before the squad for the World Cup is named in June.

Boye, who missed Ghana's two previous World Cup qualifiers against Egypt in Kumasi and Cairo, returns to the fold after recovering from the thigh injury that nearly marred his perfect season in the French top-flight.

Also returning to the fold is Jordan Ayew who was also not available for the matches in in Kumasi and Cairo but having secured impressive playing time on loan with Sochaux, Appiah wants want to give the last son of legend Abedi Pele the chance.

His elder brother Andre Ayew is in the team as he has recovered from the injury that kept him out of action since suffering that setback on the match against Egypt in Cairo in November last year.

Boye who missed the two qualifiers against Egypt has recovered from the thigh injury and he will partner in-form central defenders Jonathan Mensah and Jerry Akaminko.

The wing-backs for the match are Harrison Afful, Samuel Inkoom, Daniel Opare and David Addy while midfielders Albert Adomah, Mubarak Wakaso and Christian Atsu are in team.

It will be the last friendly match for Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah before he names his squad for the 2014 World Cup.

It will also be the Black Stars first game of the year and the final chance for players to impress the coach before he names his team for the competition in Brazil in June.

Ghana will face European countries Germany and Portugal in Group G at the World Cup with the United States as the last team in the group.

Ghana squad:

Goalkeepers: Adam Kwarasey (Stromgodset, Norway), Stephen Adams (Aduana Stars)

Defenders: Harrison Afful (Esperance, Tunisia), Samuel Inkoom (Platanias, Greece), Daniel Opare (Standard Liege, Belgium), David Addy (Vitoria Guimaraes, Portugal), Jerry Akaminko (Eskisehirspor, Turkey), John Boye (Rennes, France), Jonathan Mensah (Evian, France)

Midfielders: Michael Essien (AC Milan, Italy), Sulley Muntari (AC Milan, Italy), Kwadwo Asamoah (Juventus, Italy), Kevin-Prince Boateng (Schalke, Germany), Emmanuel Agyemang Badu (Udinese, Italy), Albert Adomah (Middlesbrough, England), Mubarak Wakaso (Rubin Kazan, Russia), Christian Atsu (Vitesse Arnhem, Holland), Andre Ayew (Marseille, France)

Strikers: Asamoah Gyan (Al Ain, UAE), Abdul Majeed Waris (Valenciennes, Italy), Jordan Ayew (Marseille, France)

For real get your facts right, Adomah is top scorer for middlesbourough and is receiving high praise for what he is doing this season he has only just come back from injury hence why he was on the bench so please let's not lie on a man doing well for his team

Straight off the bat Boakye and not Jordan should have been called or Accam/ Shadrach. Why does the coach continue to think that Afful is a quality r/b i really don't know.It is time that D.Addy and Rahman or Nana Asare be allowed to compete for the two l/b positions and let Opare and Inkoom-who have finally started playing again and thus deserves his call up-do the same for the r/b post. Also Lee Addy or Sumaila should be considered for the 4th c/h slot as clearly Vorzah wont make it..............unfortunately.Please coach you will be shortening the squad if Adomah goes to Brazil as clearly he isn't good enough for this level of football.Acheampong-by far the better winger-should be considered or Bernard Kumordze who could add a lot of creativity to the midfield, which is top heavy with many D/M players. Finally why call up Wakaso,so soon after the tragic death-my deepest condolences to you Wakaso-of his dear baby at just 4 month old.No one can heal so fast coach after the tragic lost of a loved one especially a baby, his first child at that.I remember Aruna Dindane of the Ivory Coast suffered the lost of his baby girl and the mistake was made to take him to Germany and he was a pale shadow of himself.Wakaso isn't even playing at the moment for Rubin as they know that the healing process can take a very long time. This coach is a 4 month old baby NOT a 14 yrs. old teen or 24 yrs.old man which Wakaso could have healed from more easily and quickly.Unless he has great psychological and emotional strength of recovery then coach my advise is that..............which would be very very sad,Wakaso Mubarak MUST NOT GO TO BRAZIL! MY squad is as follows; Stephen Adams-Adam Kwarasey-Opare-Inkoom-Akaminko-Boye-Mensah-Lee Addy or Rashad Sumaila-David Addy- Baba Rahman;Dede-Asamoah-Essien-Muntari-Rabui-Badu-Atsu-Kumoardzi-A.Acquah or K.Acheamong; Gyan,Warsi,Boakye and yes K.P.B.Considering his injury concerns i believe he will serve the team by doing as little running as is possible to defend,so play him alonside Gyan or immediately-like how Ronaldinho use to play for Brazil-behind Gyan and Abdul. What do you lot think of my 23?

Am surprised with Wakaso's inclusion.the guy has not been playing.Rabiu is being left out of the team due to his own stupidity.he could have gotten a loan spell elsewhere like majeed.but,no,he decided to stay and enjoy the long break when the russian league went off.he should blame himself,if he doesnt make it to brazil.

Incoom and Adomah are my only issues. I am pleased to see Jordan back. i think A Gyan should be benched small. Hes scoring rate is poor. He's usually 1 for 20 in chances. Jordan is a better stricker.. if he gets more time, he will score more than Gyan.
  • spellBOUND says:
    February 24, 2014 07:04 pm
Essien said he doesn't expect or want any special treatment, and wants to be treated like any other player as far as selection is concerned. with regards to being excused, he never asked for it. that was an assumption by GSN, as it is their bread and butter to make them from implications and not from substantial evidence. jokers they r.

WOW. No Fatau Dauda. It will be a shame if he doesn't go to the World Cup since he contributed enormously for us to qualify for the WC. Fatau should just cancel his contract with his current team and come back to Ash Gold for him to stand any chance of going to the WC in Brazil.Else it would be MONKEY DEY WORK BABOON DEY CHOP for him.

chale, dont piss people off on this forum. the phrase "MONKEY DEY WORK BABOON DEY CHOP" is the reality of life. we need the best squad in the end, not an out of form squad just to maintain loyalty. we live in a "what have u done for me lately" world. anyway, i think the current defense need to spend some training time together. as our weakest link, if they can gel as a unit before the mundial, as we already have the midfield and striking force.

@assisi: sorry to say, regarding monkey dey work baboon dey chop, but in soccer, you are as good as your last game! it doesn't matter your contribution --- either sustain your form or ship out for those who are in-form to enter. we want trophies, and those who can help win it should go, not necessarily those who contributed to qualifying. ask yourself --what is the use of qualifying and going to spend all the million of dollars the minister is budgeting up....only for us to come home after round 1? what will be the use? so please, stop patronizing anyone who is dropped ----vorsah, dauda...and anyone else ....better be fit/pick form....else...the axe will fall on you! enuf said! beats me!

It's 90% complete squad with the exception of Inkoom, Afful and Adomah who's position has been taken by chalobah and has not been starting for middleborg lately. These 3 players arent world cup material. I keep on saying that, it will be the best interest for the nation and AA himself to play wakaso as left back and David addy can deputise him and Akaminko as right full back and opare deputise him him. He Akaminko has been playing as right full back many times this season for his club and his club hold the least goals conceded in the Turkisk top flight. Inkoom and Afful are crap!!!

We comments with facts and not just reading online new . Adomah has lost his place in the team. It's true he has been scoring but u gotta watch the dude playing, he might be good but not a word cup material. I'll opt for Acheampong and ismael yartey at any given day rather than Adomah. Why the hatred towards Adomah? This guy has been brillant for middlesbrough. He has scored goals and made assists for them. If any player should be picked he should be one of them. No one has taken his place at middlesbrough. He had a minor injury and the coach didnt want to risk him. The league he plays in is a hard league, before people start saying why is he not playing in the premier league well i take it the offer wasnt right. Let all get behind the team and support them.

I am glad some people understand why adomah is included. There might be a game where we need someone who can simply come up the right side and send in crosses. In some games it is not about beautiful football. Keep in mind that Adomah can also be used as a striker in a situation if there is an injury somewhere. In any sport, you need role players.

Londonboy thumps for ur comment on adomah but pls to insult somebody is not the right way to take. We kno some just make their points for making sake without doing the researching. Albert adomah might not be skillful as many of u wish but that guy has good speed n is very tactically desciplined covering up n helping the defence. His crosses are very accurate and he can also score goals. Any coach with tactical brains n understanding will start Adomah against Germany becuz that guy has the speed to move forward and back without getting tired easily. Adomah can definately play in the premiership and let me tell u folks some of these championship playerd earn better money than most first division players in holland, germany, france and belgium. Adomah for brazil 2014

No insults, a civil conversation is for the mannered. Jordan and Adoma play almost similar style of football so I think it would be wise to drop one and add a very strong defensive midfielder because it's likely Essien and muntari could get 2 yellow cards, I would prefer Rabeu if fit . And looking at the competitive nature of the world cup I would suggest A Appiah(Katakyie) to not use Aful cos they will run over him remember friendly match between Gh and Australia , Opare is better for the RB and David Addy for left back and remember these guys hve wining mentality
