Stielike sets Korea Republic coaching record

Published on: 23 March 2017

Changsha: Uli Stielike has made another noteworthy addition to his already glittering resume by becoming Korea Republic’s longest-serving head coach.

Despite Thursday’s 1-0 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying defeat to China providing a far from ideal backdrop to the momentous landmark, March 24 represents the 912th day of the German’s stint in the Taeguk Warriors hotseat, a figure that surpasses the 911 days racked up by former AFC Coach of the Year Huh Jung-moo.

Stielike, who succeeded previous incumbent Hong Myung-bo following the country’s ill-fated 2014 World Cup campaign in Brazil, famously guided Korea Republic to the final of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup where his side lost narrowly to host nation Australia.

Since that defeat Down Under, Korea Republic have qualified for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup and are within touching distance of securing their ticket to the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia.
