Manchester City defender John Stones said he and his teammates were "disappointed" not to have met their usual standards in Wednesday's 2-1 Champions League defeat at home to Basel.
City set a new Champions League record for the most passes in Wednesday's home defeat, completing 978 passes in the loss to the Swiss champions.
It came just three days after they had broken the Premier League record against Chelsea with 902 passes, but City scored just once against the Londoners and created little in either of the two games.
And England international Stones, making his second start in six weeks, said he was disappointed by City's lacklustre performance despite a 5-2 aggregate win securing progress to the quarterfinals.
"We wanted to make sure that we got through to the next round and bettered ourselves from last season," he said.
"Being knocked out by Monaco last season hurt, so we wanted to put things right this season. But we're not happy with how we played. We wanted to win and see it through that way.
"There's a lot of things we need to look at moving forward, both individually and as a team. We weren't at our best.
"We set high standards for ourselves, and we were disappointed that we didn't meet those standards."
City coach Pep Guardiola, who rested many of his regular starters against Basel, said his side "forgot to play" and had appeared to be passing the ball without intent at times.
