Sunderland among five clubs chasing Ghanaian youngster Opare

Published on: 22 April 2011

Sunderland are among the clubs monitoring the potential availability of the Ghana defender Daniel Opare.

Opare, a 20-year-old who can play at either right-back or left-back, joined Standard Liège from Real Madrid Castilla – the reserve club of the Spanish giants – a year ago and is now attracting attention from several clubs across Europe.

Lyon, Lille, Wolfsburg and Spartak Moscow have joined Sunderland in being interested in a player whom Liège have valued at £7m but who is likely to be sold for something closer to £4m.

Opare, a fast and overlapping full-back, received his first international call-up at 17 and was involved in Ghana's 1-1 draw against England at Wembley last month.
