Sunderland captain John O'Shea launched a bitter attack on Real Madrid star Gareth Bale after Friday's World Cup qualifier.

Republic of Ireland defender O'Shea opened verbal fire on Bale after he was on the end of a dangerously high tackle from the Wales star, which inflicted injuries that required internal and external stitches for the Sunderland man.

Bale was fortunate to escape with just a yellow card from the incident, with the O'Shea seething after watching TV replays of the incident after the 0-0 draw.

“There is no problem getting a hard tackle but when people are very late, and stuff like that, it is a different story," said O'Shea, who suggested their was malicious intent in Bale's lunging challenge.

“When I saw it back, yes, I was a little bit annoyed. It was one of 'them'. Thankfully I am walking away from it. So no problem."
