Sunderland coach backing Asamoah Gyan to shine

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is hoping Asamoah Gyan can continue his smooth transition to the Premier League in the absence of Darren Bent.

The 25-year-old Ghana international is set to lead the line against Blackpool this weekend on his own following the departure of Bent to Aston Villa, although the Black Cats are set to sign Ricardo Fuller.

Gyan has scored seven goals in 19 league appearances since his arrival at the Stadium of Light in the summer and has already made an impact in England.

Boss Bruce has been delighted with his displays so far, and hopes the African star can keep turning in the performances.

"It's rare to come from another country and hit it off straight away," Bruce said in the Daily Express.

"It usually takes time. Asamoah has already scored more goals than Bent from open play and he is a good player. Now he's our only striker.

"We expect him to come to the table. The only thing is if something happens to him and he gets injured, then we're truly goosed.

"He will relish the responsibility. He likes that. I've no problem with him playing on his own up front.

"Asamoah has played all of his career as a lone striker for his country and his teams, so we will see what he can bring and what he can do."

Gyan made the switch to Sunderland for £13million in August from Rennes, and he penned a four-and-a-half year deal.
