SuperSport still keen on Ghana league

Continental sports broadcaster SuperSport says it will give the Ghanaian league massive cash boost if the right conditions are in place.

The South African firm will invest over US$100m in the Nigerian, Uganda and Kenya leagues over the next five years despite the Ghanaian top-flight having a bigger profile.

SuperSport took over the television coverage of the Nigerian, Uganda and Kenya league which resulted in the cash injection in the leagues.

Kotoko and Hearts have bigger profiles and attract bigger crowds than top clubs in the three countries which has raised concern over SuperSport’s lack of interest in the Ghanaian league.

"The situation with the Ghanaian league and SuperSport is complicated because it has got go through another broadcaster before reaching us,'' Gary Rathbone, head of SuperSport International said at the first business conference on African football.

"If the opportunity comes and we are directly involved then we will look at similar support for the Ghana league where there will be quality production for the coverage.

"There is no doubt that Ghana is one of Africa’s exciting opportunities."

The Ghana Premier League rights is owned by Metro TV but there have been concerns over the quality of their production of the live coverage of the matches.
