Suspension of ECG Regional boss over stadium blackout annulled

The Electricity Company of Ghana insists none of its officials have been dismissed despite the nation’s uproar over the stadium blackout on Friday.

The flood lights at the Baba Yara Stadium failed to come on during Ghana’s opening World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.

The game had to be suspended for well over two hours at a point the Black Stars were up by 4-0 early in the second half for the problem to be rectified.

It was during the blackout that Communications Director at the Presidency Koku Anyidoho revealed to Joy FM that the Regional Head of the ECG in the Ashanti Region has been suspended due to the embarrassment.

“The Ashanti Regional Director of ECG has been suspended,” he said.

“The President is upset and everyone in the firing line will be fired.

“The people of Ghana matter more to the President than those individuals who man those institutions. This is unacceptable and the President (John Atta-Mills) is highly upset.

“It has to do with ECG, it has to do with everyone responsible for this match and heads are rolling.

“It starts with the Ashanti Regional boss and it will continue. Certainly all those who must have their head rolled will be rolled.”

A statement however from the ECG which was later corroborated by the Energy Ministry alongside snippets of information from government communicators including an eventual retraction by Anyidoho himself has nullified the earlier declaration.

“Everyone including the President was upset and the decision was reached at the heat of the moment,” he said barely 15 hours later.

The flood lights at the Baba Yara Stadium came back on after over an hour hold of the game which finished a staggering 7-0 in favour of the Black Stars.

Who do you think should be blamed for the blackout at the Baba Yara Stadium?

Should the National Sports Authority take ultimate responsibility for Friday’s embarrassment?

Should the Communications Director at the Presidency also be faulted for his earlier utterances or ECG should be also liable?
