Swansea City captain Ashley Williams says the signing of Andre Ayew is a statement of intent by the Premier League club.

France-born striker Ayew, 25, is a former BBC African Footballer of the Year and has won 62 caps for Ghana, scoring 11 goals.

Ayew has arrived at Liberty Stadium on a four-year deal after coming out of contract at Marseille.

"It shows that the club is going in the right direction again," Williams said.

"It's a big signing... he's a good player."

Ayew, son of Marseille and Ghana legend Abedi Pele, is set for a medical at Swansea this week.

Bafetimbi Gomis is the senior striker at Swansea, after Nelson Oliveira returned to Benfica following his loan spell and with Wilfried Bony having been sold to Manchester City last January.

"We obviously needed some strikers because Bafe is on his own, so we'll definitely welcome him [Ayew] to the club," centre-back Williams added.

Swansea City will begin the 2015-2016 Premier League season away to champions Chelsea and will finish on 15 May at home to Manchester City.
