Ghana Premier League action continued over the weekend across 7 match venues. It wasn’t a particularly good week for teams on the road as they managed two draws with no win.
Elmina Sharks and Ashanti Gold SC clashed on Saturday in the weekend’s top liner. The battle between 1st and 5th was action-packed and end to end but failed to produce goals. At the end of 90 minutes, honours were shared.
Eleven Wonders were at their usual best at home on Sunday as they accounted for Ebusua Dwarfs in a 2-0 encounter. Abdul Fatawu Safiu and Alex Asamoah struck in either half to ease past their opponents.
West Africa Football Academy and Wa All Stars played out a 1 all drawn game at the Cape Coast stadium. Umar Bashiru put WAFA in the lead in the first half through a spot kick but David Abagna levelled for All Stars in the second half to leave the scores even.
Victorien Adje Adebayor was on hand yet again as his solitary strike gave Inter Allies all three points against Berekum Chelsea at the Tema Park.
Medeama SC sneaked into second place on the log after a 2-0 victory over Dreams FC at the T and A. Two second-half goals from Kwesi Donsu and Eric Kwakwa dethroned Dreams FC from the second spot.
Liberty Professionals pipped giant killers Karela FC by a goal to nil at the Carl Reindorf Park. Substitute Alex Ofori Acheampong was the match winner hitting the roof of the net from inside the 6 yard.
Asante Kotoko finally got a win after a torrid last two games in Sunday’s late kickoff. Bechem United frustrated Kotoko in the first half but Kotoko found a way past them in the second half through an Emmanuel Gyamfi strike.
THE UNSUNG HEROES THUS FAR...
Too many times teams and/or individuals go unheralded even when they are very well punching above their weight. How certain heroics of people in this bracket evade public eye and go unnoticed have to be the ninth wonder of this earth.
One team that seems to be suffering this fate in the Ghana premier league this term is Elmina Sharks. They have not flirted with defeat after their 1-0 defeat to Dreams FC on the opening day of the league. Not only have they ground out results when need be but have as well masterminded some victories with glitz and style.
Elmina Sharks lie 5th on the league log, having played 2 games less. They have scored 10 goals and conceded 6, amassing 17 points in the process. They have won 4, drawn 5 with their only defeat of the season coming in their opening fixture.
Elmina Sharks have for most part of the season so far played without fear no matter the ground. They have succeeded in imposing their style on games and influencing them to their favour. Having added some experience to their fold in the preseason, they have managed to blend effectively the old and new to attain the needed telepathic balance.
The ripple effect of everything they have done right is what is being witnessed in their games. However, for a strange reason, they have gone unnoticed, unheralded and hugely underappreciated so far. They have hardly had a shout in the league discourse on several media and platforms.
Grotesque as it may appear it only re-emphasizes how certain heroics remain unsung no matter its magnitude and intensity.
With such an enviable run under their belt not even once have they being sounded out as even a potential for a top 4 berth. Never hailed! Never nailed! The unique tale of the unsung heroes thus far.
