The Blind Pass: A weekly feature on Ghana Premier League - Relegation dogfight intensifies

Published on: 09 October 2017

It looks all but decided at the top but the real tug of war is at the foot of the log where the battle for survival has intensified. Week 28 saw some interesting results which sets up a mouth watering finale to the premier league season.

Aduana Stars maintained a firm grip on top spot as they dispatched off Bolga All Stars in a 4-1 drubbing. Derrick Sasraku struck twice with Sam Adams and Nathaniel Asamoah getting a goal apiece to cement the victory. Sam Norgbey got the only consolation for the home side.

Saddique Hadji Abubakar’s solitary strike for Bechem United was enough to down Asante Kotoko at the Nana Gyeabour park in Bechem.

Ashanti Gold SC defeated Tema Youth football club by 2 goals to nil with goals coming from Hans Kwofie and Shafiu Mumuni.

Great Olympics pulled the upset of the week as they went, saw and conquered Elmina Sharks at the Nduom stadium in Edina. Daniel Appiah’s goal settled proceedings in a cagey encounter.

Inter Allies moved 2 points clear off the drop zone with a convincing 2-0 win at home over Medeama SC. Wahab Ackwei and Hasmin Musah were on hand to give Inter Allies this all important victory.

Hearts of Oak withstood a late onslaught by Ebusua Dwarfs to finish the game 2-1 in their favour. Two early goals from Winful Cobbinah and Joshua Otoo was halved by Joseph Esso at the death of the first half.

Liberty Professionals and Berekum Chelsea played out a 6 goal thriller at the Carl Reindorf. Liberty edged the goal feast by 4 goals to 2. Bernard Arthur and Samuel Sarfo scored twice for Liberty and Chelsea respectively whilst Michael Ampadu and Frederick Ansah added the other two for the home team.

West Africa Football Academy kept the chase on table toppers Aduana Stars with a resounding 3-0 thumping of champions Wa All Stars. Musa Nuhu, Mohammed Coulibaly and Prince Obeng Ampem registered their names on the scoresheet for WAFA.

RELEGATION DOGFIGHT INTENSIFIES…

With six points to play for before the curtain is drawn on the 2016/2017 Ghana premier league season, the quest to stay afloat is at an all time high. Mathematically only four teams are safe with one already relegated at the close of match day 28. The rest of 11 teams would have to fight tooth and nail to avoid the last two places of the drop. With only 6 points separating the 5th placed team and the 15th placed team there is all to play for.

The last two games promises to be fierce and ferocious as possible candidates for relegation will leave nothing to chance to ensure their safety in the premier league. The keen and decisive nature of the remaining fixtures will require that all stakeholders put up their best possible behaviour to ensure a free and fair end to the season.

Again, the men in black at the centre have the tedious responsibility of being on top of their game and ensuring that no team goes down peeved by their actions and/or inactions.

Teams with their fate already determined are admonished to play it competitively to the very end in order not to hand any team an undue advantage over another.

In the interest and for the credibility of our game, stakeholders should keep it as a charge to give football enthusiasts an eventful last two games devoid of any pandemonium.

To all the clubs, we say all the best in the remaining matches.
