The Blind Pass: A weekly feature on the Ghana Premier League - A Breather at last for Godwin Attram

Published on: 03 April 2017

A hectic weekend of premier league football was upon us after the international break. 14 out of the 16 league teams were in action with the top liner between champions Wa All Stars and Aduana Stars postponed.

Goalkeeping heroics by Liberty Professional’s Emmanuel Anning ensured that his side left the Nduom stadium with a valuable point in 1 all draw with Elmina Sharks.

West Africa Football Academy were undoubtedly the team of the week as they upset the apple cart to defeat Bechem United in Bechem by a lone goal. It was a rare win on the road for WAFA with a no so impressive away record to boast of.

A Stephen Sarfo opener for Berekum Chelsea was the difference in their game against Hearts of Oak at the Golden City.

Inter Allies held Asante Kotoko to an uneventful goalless game at the Baba Yara stadium on Sunday.

The struggles of Ashanti Gold FC continued as they could only manage a draw at home to bottom placed Bolga All Stars. Ashgold fluffed an early opportunity with a penalty miss right from kick off. They however took the lead in the second half only to be pegged back late on.

Medeama SC rallied to pull parity in the second half after they were stunned early in the game by the home side Tema Youth. Michael Kporvi’s goal in the 5th minute was cancelled out by Benjamin Bature just after the hour mark to leave hostilities all squared after 90 minutes.

Accra Great Olympics recorded their first win of the season over Ebusua Dwarfs through a solitary Bernardinho Osah Tetteh’s strike. The win comes as a big relief for embattled player cum coach Godwin Attram who has been constantly given the stick amid some poor run of results .

A BREATHER AT LAST…

With the tendering in of a resignation at Obuasi, another string of poor results by Great Olympics would have meant Godwin Attram enjoying a monopoly of an under fire coach.

Prior to Bashiru Hayford’s resignation as coach of Ashanti Gold FC , he was arguably the most maligned coach in the premier league alongside Godwin Attram. His throwing in of the towel inadvertently switched all the attention to Godwin Attram as the next coach to probably be guillotined off his duties.

The player cum coach’s call for calm and patience among the rank and file at Olympics was backed with results this weekend. Having already won boardroom points off Bolga All Stars, Godwin Attram led his charges to bag maximum points for the first time this season over Ebusua Dwarfs. This has shot the Accra based club from second from bottom to two places above the drop zone.

Many who have watched them play had attributed their lucklustre performance not to poor build up play but to lack of composure in front of goal and glaring lack of experience. Having found an antidote to their goal scoring conundrum have Great Olympics hit the right stride to turn around their fortunes?

With nerves seem to have calmed considerably, will Great Olympics build on this result and turn on the style subsequently or it will turn out to be a mere flash in the pan. Whichever way, A BREATHER AT LAST for Attram and his charges.
