The Blind Pass - A weekly Feature on the Ghana Premier League: Champions in Shambles

Published on: 11 April 2016

A blink and you miss a keepsake moment base on which your fondest football memory could have been told.

Like a catacosmesis climax the Ghana premier league seem to have only just started. The roars are heightened by the week as events unfold dramatically.

The pre-game banter swayed a lot of the attention to the Nana Ameyaw park in Techiman where Techiman city FC held Hearts of oak in a barren encounter.

Berekum Chelsea beat Aduana Stars to keep their home invincibility which spans over 20 games intact. All stars extended their lead on the log with a solitary goal win against struggling Ebusua Dwarfs.

The decision to push their gaffer to step aside temporarily seemed to have worked magic for Asante Kotoko as they accounted for Liberty professionals by 3 goals to 1. New Edubiase united halted West Africa football academy’s home run after cancelling out Samuel Tetteh’s goal late in the game.

Dreams football club stunned Ashgold at the Len Clay and piled more misery on their already disjointed season. Inter Allies put poor travellers Bechem united to the sword and hit them for 4 to get back to winning ways.

CHAMPIONS IN SHAMBLES.

Dreams football club recorded a rare victory away from home in a league where away wins are far and few. The implications of this no mean an achievement meant a further clutter in the fortunes of champions Ashanti Gold FC.

The aftermath of their title winning charge last season has been characterized by a comedy of footballing and administrative errors. They have seldom put a foot right ever since with their embarrassing exit from the African champions league at the climax of it all.

Issues of unpaid bonuses and signing on fees have popped up in the course of it all but what seem to have cut the thin rope they clinged on is the reported tussle between the head coach and a player over a gorgeous damsel. Their unimpressive start to the defence of their title could hardly be criticized because they had managed to avoid defeat in their first 5 games. The rebuttal was always that champions manage to grind out results even on their worst of days and it was indeed justified then.

However their 5-1 humbling by Liberty professionals and home defeat to Dreams FC in quick succession has plunged them into a deeper kerfuffle. With supporters disgruntled, management shattered and shoulders of players dropped the centre cannot hold at Obuasi.

A PLOT TWIST OR JUST A FLATTERY TO DECEIVE..

Without the benefit of hindsight only a fortune teller would have predicted the resurgence of Wa based All stars. With a quite preseason only highligted by a trip to the middle east no connoisseur, tall or short, rich or poor, black or white, fat or skinny, male or female, dead or alive gave them the slenderest of chances to come this far without a dent or blemish. All stars do not only lead the pack but have gone a whopping 630 minutes of football without a defeat. It is still early days yet but their exploits provoke thought and give every reason to put them into perspective. Are they the real deal to upset the applecart and play gallantly to the very end? OR they are only pretenders whose early season wonder will vanish into thin air and not stand the test of times?

The weeks ahead promise an interesting tale you just can’t afford to miss. Remember a blink and you miss a Ghana premier league memento forever. Keep watch and keep your eyes fixed!
