Atletico midfielder Thomas Partey says they were sure of win over FC Copenhagen in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie on Thursday.

The Rojiblancos, who are making their first appearance in the UEFA second-tier club competition since winning the competition in the 2011/12 season, were dealt an early blow as former Ajax Amsterdam striker Viktor Fischer put the hosts ahead on the 15th minute mark.

But two quick strikes from Saul Niguez and Kevin Gameiro in the 21st and 37th respective minutes handed the Spanish giants the lead before the half time time whistle.

An Antoine Greizmann's 71st minute goal put the game beyond Stale Solbakken's men before Victor Vitolo sealed a comfortable 4-1 victory for the visitors.

And Partey who enjoyed full throttle of the game, playing in his usual midfield role, says they knew they were going to leave the Telia Parken with a victory.

"We came out very plugged, but it was a good job for the whole team and we are satisfied with the win."

"They started strong, they scored, but we started even better and we knew we were going to come back and the team responded. We are happy."

"It has not affected us, it's cold, but we try to run and so we do not get cold. We went well, we played as we should and in the end it is winning and we have achieved it."

"Before his goal, we had three chances and we did not score. We knew the goal would come."

"Atleti knows how to play, although it also depends on the opponent. When it gets complicated, we look for more in the long run," he added.

The return encounter is due to come off at the Wanda Metropolitano on Thursday, February 22.
