“We start the season in three competitions, and the ambition is to win those three trophies,” said West Ham co-owner David Sullivan to TalkSport.
Although Sullivan's ambition is easy to laugh off, it is worth noting that the four signings the London club have secured for this season have been a 28-year-old, 29-year-old, 30-year-old and a 32-year-old (Marko Arnautović, Javier Hernandez, Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta respectively).
It is clear that with the new stadium, the club is looking for quick success, and here are three men who will be playing for their futures this season at West Ham.
1) Andy Caroll
Andy Caroll’s first start in the Premier League was in 2010 and we are two weeks away from the 2017-18 season. In all those seven seasons, he has managed just 180 appearances in England's top division.
With the signing of Chicharito, Andy Caroll is no longer the first-choice striker even if he is fit. But there is still hope for the England international if he does manage to put his injury troubles behind him. The problem with that is the 'if' is a huge one.
When West Ham bought André Ayew for a club record fee of £20.5 million, they did not expect his tally for the season to be capped at six goals.
With the arrival Arnautović, Ayew might not be the club's record buy, but he is still expected to better his goal return from last season.
Given that most Premier League managers prefer playing with just one centre forward, and with wingers of the calibre of Arnautović, Michail Antonio and Robert Snodgrass in the team, getting into the starting lineup will in itself be a challenge.
If Ayew does not start repaying the money the Hammers paid for him, Bilić will probably call Marseille himself this time.
3) Sofiane Feghouli
It is quite staggering to think that Sofiane Feghouli has struggled so much at West Ham. He just made 11 starts last season and often flattered to deceive, ending up with a goal tally of three. What is damning though is he has just three assists to his name; a tally which he comfortably bettered in each of his four previous seasons with Valencia.
The Algerian will hope that he can recapture the form that made him one of the best right wingers in La Liga. If he wants to remain at West Ham long term, he desperately needs to.
