Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino wanted a replacement for Pau Lopez, the Spain under-21 keeper who has returned to Espanyol after spending last season on loan at Spurs, and believes his compatriot can provide competition for Michel Vorm as club captain Hugo Lloris' deputy.
Pochettino and Gazzaniga, who will wear the No. 22 shirt, both hail from Murphy in Argentina and the manager knows the goalkeeper from his time at St. Mary's.
Gazzaniga made 32 appearances in the Spanish Segunda Division on loan at Rayo Vallencano last season, and he has previously played 22 times in the Premier League for Saints.
