Uganda coach fires patriotism warning to Black Stars ahead of AFCON clash
Ghana will play Uganda in the qualifiers for the 2014 AFCON

Uganda coach Micho has fired a warning to Ghana that the patriotism of his players will help them edge past the Black Stars in the qualifiers for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Cranes secured their place in the Group of Death of the qualifiers for the tournament in Morocco over the weekend after defeating Mauritania in the preliminary stage of the qualifiers.

Robert Ssentongo’s injury time winner for a 3-0 aggregate victory over Mauritania on Sunday not only marked the Cranes first away win in three years; it emphatically confirmed Uganda’s trip to Ghana as their first 2015 Nations Cup qualification assignment.

Having gone into the game in Nouakchott needing just to avoid defeat to progress to Group E, where four-time African champions Ghana, Togo and Guinea await.

Now the Cranes go into the group stage in September hoping to end a 36-year absence from the Nations Cup finals. But they also know the opposition there is not Mauritania.

“It is the group of death but playable and also passable at least as one of two best,” Micho told Daily Monitor.

“If you ask me how to achieve that, I need to tell you I count on players’ undoubted love to the country and ambitions to change history of Uganda, our supporters and you media to provide the environment of belief that we can do it.”

“We in technical team together with leadership of Fufa and sponsors must get a precise programme in detail so that we know what we are doing at any given moment”.

“But if we are to succeed we need government support in the same way governments in Ghana, Togo and Guinea do.”

Uganda will open their campaign in Ghana on 10 September before the Black Stars go on to face Togo in Lome four days later.

The last time Uganda registered an away win was on March 26, 2011; then a David Obua goal confirming a 1-0 win in Guinea Bissau.

The difference, however, is that 2011 was in the group stage proper.
