STITCH IN TIME: Geoffrey Massa celebrates after scoring Uganda’s second goal against Mauritania

Uganda look set to qualify for the 2015 Nations Cup qualification group stage to face Ghana after a 2-0 first leg win over Mauritania over the weekend.

The winner of the two-legged tie will play the Black Stars in the group phase of the qualifier for the tournament in Morocco in January next year.

At the final whistle at Namboole on Saturday, sighs of relief could almost be heard through the nearly half-filled 40,000-capacity stadium.

The forgettable first 45 minutes had long been forgotten thanks to two well taken second half strikes by clinical substitute Brian Majwega and, on the day, a calm-personified Geoffrey Massa.

Cranes had a total of 250 complete passes while Mauritania managed only 81, which portrays Uganda’s dominance.

It is that kind of play that Uganda coach Micho will be hoping to carry on as a water-shed moment from the recent poor showings.

The aura was that of, ‘we are through. We travel to Ghana first before they come here.’

The four-time African champions, Ghana, Togo – who finished top of the 2006 Afcon/World Cup qualification group (Uganda finished second from bottom ahead of Guinea) and Guinea are Uganda’s opponents in Group E should the Cranes complete the task in Mauritania in a fortnight.
