Breaking News: Under-fire Ghana U20 coach quits - Wellington jumps before he is pushed

Published on: 10 July 2012

Ghana U20 coach Orlando Wellington has resigned as the coach of the side after failing to deliver good results for the Black Satellites, GHANAsoccernet.com can exclusively reveal.

The ex-Heart of Lions trainer slapped in his resignation letter on Tuesday after the Ghana Football Association hinted that there would be a massive technical clear-out.

Wellington has come under the microscope in the local media after strings of mediocre performances in friendly matches ahead of the qualifying campaign to the 2013 African Youth Championship.

Their 2-2 home draw against Namibia on Sunday sparked fresh calls for his sacking before Satellites management chief George Afriyie admitted that they were considering technical changes for the former world champions.

But Wellington dodged the bullet by opting to quit before he is fired.

History will mark him down as a massive failure if he is unable to build a formidable squad capable of  qualifying  to the Championship and reclaiming the title on the continent next year.

Wellington has not endeared himself to local fans after his team flopped badly at an eight-national tournament held in South Africa.

The Black Satellites were also thrashed 3-0 by the country’s Under-17 side in a friendly in May.

For a man who was an assistant to Sellas Tetteh when Ghana conquered Africa and the world in 2009, many have questioned his technical acumen to guide the team to the promise land after he failed woefully to defend the African crown in 2011.

There are many who believe Wellington is not the right man to take the Black Satellites forward after the recent serious failures but he insists he is focused on the task ahead.
