Urawa Reds must do it for Japan, says Podolski

Saitama: German star Lukas Podolski believes a victory for Urawa Red Diamonds in Wednesday’s AFC Champions League semi-final, second leg against China’s Shanghai SIPG would benefit the entirety of Japanese football.

The FIFA World Cup-winner, who now plays his football for J.League side Vissel Kobe, boasts an overflowing trophy cabinet that includes titles from England, Turkey and his native Germany, and is well aware of the significance of appearing at the top level tournaments.

“In terms of sponsors, marketing and other factors it would be very good for the J.League if Urawa can reach the final of the AFC Champions League,” said the 32-year-old forward.

“A Japanese team going to the final would be great for Japanese football.”

The former Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Galatasaray man also has a personal connection to Wednesday’s clash at Saitama Stadium with former FC Koln teammate Tomoaki Makino slated to start for Urawa.

The Japan defender had a spell in Germany from 2010-2012 that coincided with Podolski’s second stint at the club.

“I played with him at FC Koln and he became a good friend, we hung out a lot outside off the pitch too,” said Podolski.

“We had a lot of fun in Cologne and it’s nice to see him doing well here in Urawa.

“He’s a national team player and his face is like a model – so he’s definitely got an advantage in sponsors and marketing here in Japan!

Makino (18) and Podoslki (10) celebrate with their FC Koln teammates.

“I wish him and his team Urawa all the best in their efforts to reach the final.”

And will Podolski be joining his friend for celebrations should Makino and his teammates go all the way and lift Urawa’s second AFC Champions League?

“It depends if he and his club invite me, and if my club give me a day off…but it’s not far from Kobe to Tokyo by train – so why not?”
