Danny Welbeck has admitted to feeling mixed emotions after making his first England appearance at Wembley on Tuesday night.
The Manchester United striker, currently on loan at Sunderland, came on for his senior international debut in the final 10 minutes of England's 1-1 draw against Ghana.
However, he was booed by visiting supporters after turning down the chance to represent the birthplace of his parents in favour of pursuing a career with the Three Lions.
Ghana had hoped to convince Welbeck to play for them and he can understand why fans reacted to his introduction with jeers.
But while he maintains that the African nation will always hold a special place in his heart, the 20-year-old says he had always set his sights on turning out for England.
"It was a bittersweet moment. I've got love for both countries but I can't play for both," he told Sky Sports News.
"I kind of understand that (the boos) but I can't make everyone happy.
"I've been playing for England at every single youth team level so it was a natural progression to move up to the seniors.
"I am obviously delighted with my progress."
Ghana's goalscorer Asamoah Gyan, who plays alongside Welbeck at the Stadium of Light, does not believe the negative feelings run too deep.
Talking about his side's supporters, Gyan said: "They do love him, but in football the fans sometimes frustrate you.
"I have talked to him but he made his decision and I do respect that."
