VIDEO: Football referee attacked, punched, chased in Lebanon

Published on: 07 March 2013

Soccer referee Bachir Awasa was kicked and chased across the field by irate players and team officials after issuing yellow and red cards during a Lebanese second division match between Al-Nahda and Al-Salam Zgharta in Beirut.

The trouble began when Al-Nahda's Youssef Omar was penalised for a foul before seeing yellow for his reaction to the decision.

When the card turned red, he turned red as well, chasing Awasa around the field before swinging his arms and trying to kick him.

Other players and team officials soon became involved and Awasa was soon running from one end of the pitch to the other to escape the esculating situation.

Despite the presence of security personnel and men dressed in army clothing brandishing a gun of some kind, the incident went on for some three minutes before Awasa dashed for the safety of the changing sheds.

It has been reported that Awasa has decided to retire from refereeing following the incident.
