South African giants Orlando Pirates are reported to be leading the race for the signature of SuperSport United’s midfielder Edwin Gyimah, following AmaZulu’s acquisition of Mpumalanga Black Aces’ PSL status.

This comes after Ghana's leading football news website www.ghanasoccernet.com exclusively revealed last month that the midfielder was on the verge of joining the Bucs.

The report was denied by some South African news outlets when the report was published but now it is certain Gyimah will clinch the move to improve his financial fortunes.

Ghana international impressed while on loan at Aces from SuperSport last season, helping them to a 10th place finish in the league. He was one of the first names on the team sheet, starting 25 games in all competitions.

In this week’s Soccer Laduma, issue 928, it was reported that a tug of war between Pirates and Aces could ensue, with both teams keen on the player.

With Usuthu buying Aces’ PSL status, AmaZayoni will now be plying their trade in the NFD next season, decreasing the likelihood of the chance of move for Gyimah who had already been approached by Pirates.

Sources close to Gyimah have indicated that the Buccaneers have been in touch with the player’s representatives regarding a move to the Soweto giants, and that official negotiations will likely take place this week.

With an ageing full backline of Lucky Lekgwathi, Siyabonga Sangweni and Rooi Mahamutsa, Ezika Magebhula will be looking to bolster their defensive options.

The Ghanaian midfielder would be a useful acquisition for Bucs as he is also comfortable playing in the centre of defence.
