Andre Ayew is among the ten players nominated for the top prize

The Confederation of African Football has announced the list of 10 nominees for the 2012 African Player of the Year.

Who do you think the player deserves the Ballon d’Or of African for this year? Vote for the best player and give us your opinion.

Who will succeed Yaya Toure named best African football player in 2011? The answer will be given on December 20 in Accra, Ghana, at the annual gala of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) .

Ten players are still in contention. Among them are three Ivorians : Yaya Touré (Manchester City), Didier Drogba (Shanghai Shenhua) and Gervinho (Arsenal).

The championship of France Ligue 1 is also well represented with three nominees: André Ayew (Marseille / Ghana) , Younis Belhanda, (Montpellier / Morocco) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Saint-Étienne/Gabon).

Among the last four nominees, two play in England: John Obi Mikel (Chelsea / Nigeria) and Demba Ba (Newcastle / Senegal).

Finally, the Cameroonian midfielder of FC Barcelona, ??Alexandre Song, and the captain of the Zambian African champion in 2012 , Christopher Katongo, complete the list.

On the list Didier Drogba, who won the Champions League with Chelsea and finalist CAN-2012 with Côte d’Ivoire, is the favourite.

The captain of the Elephants, already crowned in 2006 and 2009, thus running for his 3rd best African player of the Year award.

Note that the record holder of the award is awards back to Samuel Eto’o , crowned four times (2003, 2004, 2005, 2010) but absent from the list of ten nominees this year.

  1. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

why wasnt essien nominated? WHY IS DROGBA THERE? THE GUY IS PLAYING IN CHINA…I WILL GIVE IT TO THE IVORIAN YAYA TOURE/DEDE. INFACT, I WOULDNT BE SUPRISED IF DEDE WINS. HE MAY NOT DESERVE IT, BUT GIVE THE BOY A BREAK…..MOST OF THE PLAYERS ARENT REALLY DESERVING OF THE AWARD. DEDE JUST NEEDS TO IMPOSE HIS WILL IN GAMES

  2. Bond says:

    My positions 1.YAYA TOURE 2.DIDIER DROGBA 3.AYEW DEDE 4.GERVINYO 5.YOUNIS BELHANDA 6.CHRIS KATONGO 7.DEMBA BA 8.ALEX SONG 9AUBAMEYANG 10.MIKEL OBI

    • Chale' 1 says:

As much as I would like Ayew to take the crown, I agree with your placings Bond. It could be tight between Drogba and Toure but due to the fact that Drogba didn’t feature as much for Chelsea as Toure did for City, I would give it to Toure. He was excellent for both club and country.

  3. Bond says:

Caf has just shortlisted them and DEDE is not on the list s.l are 1.DEMBA BA 2.YAYA TOURE 3.BELHANDA 4.DROGBA 5.KATONGO(wonder who the phuck placed him there.mtschew). Lemme blast my speakers and get the gangnam style mood activated.

    • Kwabena says:

Bond, the shortlist is not that of CAF, this is the BBC African Player of the Year.

However, i think Dede will not be part of the CAF shorlisted candidate

    • One Andy says:

You are talking about something else my friend. That list is for BBC African player of the year and not the CAF African player of the year.We are yet to hear the 3 finalists for the CAF African player of the year finalists after they trim the list from 10 to 3

  4. kwa george says:

If it is called the Confederation of AFRICAN Football, then where is the same trophey . Simple as all that . If all those others are nominees then why didnt they win the AFCON ?

So vote sober . effect has cause.

  5. Great says:

Andre ayew or drogba any of them deserves de crown.

  6. Obbie says:

The final short list will have Drogba, Katongo and Yaya. The race is between Katongo and drogba. Katongo will get it.

  7. Chidi says:

you Ghanaians could be idiots sometimes…what the fuck has dede Ayew accomplished with his club this season to deserve the nomination? the dude is just an over-hyped ill-tempered brat with receding hairlines living under the glory of his father.

  8. kwame pito says:

I seriously dont understand why CAF is embarassing itself this way by keeping katongo in the race. The player is the captain of a team that won the Afcon and so is he suppose to be Africa’s best player? what a nonsensical case. Did the captain of egypt win it when the pharoahs won Afcon in 2010? or even the Afcon before that? I’m starting to get pissssssssed offff!!

    • One Andy says:

Kwame, the fact that Katongo has been nominated in both the BBC African player of the year awards and CAF African player of the year awards is evident in itself that the guy has put up a brilliant performance this year. These are 2 independent nominations from 2 different organisations .You may not agree with me but Katongo has been a driving force in this Zambian team encalcating a deep sense of togetherness and responsibility in the team.He is a captain who has alwayz been there behind the scenes to motivate his team mates with exceptional organisational skills on the field.Unless you tell me both Caf and BBC are foolish to have seen his leadership skills then i will understand. One other thing is that even when the odds are against us he has risen above everyone else to get the team going by scoring very vital goals for the team. From a non partisan perspective you will agree that he is not only a captain but a very good one indeed

  9. tschi kom nelson says:

i will like drogba to win the title because he has perform very will with his club this year by winning the champion league with chelsea

  10. Basten says:

Is Africa football all about goals? If not, Mikel Obi is the Best for the Year

  11. ST says:

Alex Song deserve it,just from his performances in Arsenal his formal club and he has improved his career to play in the world football club FC barcelon.infact Alex song go and take it.
