Wayne Rooney netted from the penalty spot as Everton came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock for Liverpool just before half-time, with the Egypt international turning two Everton players before bending the ball into the top corner with a great strike.

And the hosts could have doubled their advantage before the break when just a few minutes later Sadio Mane found himself through on goal, but he struck his shot wide despite having three teammates in better positions to pass to.

Salah came close to grabbing a second shortly after half-time when he met James Milner's cross at the far post, only to send his header inches wide of the target.

But Everton found an equaliser 13 minutes from time when Dominic Calvert-Lewin was brought down in the area by Dejan Lovren, with Rooney stepping up to convert from the penalty spot.

Liverpool substitute Philippe Coutinho attempted to win it for the home side with a late free kick from the edge of the box, but Jordan Pickford denied him with the save.
