West Bromwich Albion missed out on Marseille striker Jordan Ayew as the Ghana international joined  struggling Ligue 1 side Sochaux.

A statement on Sochaux’s website confirmed the news for the 22-year-old forward who had been with Marseille since 2006 when he joined as a youth member. He made his first appearance with the first team three years later.

Ayew had something of troubled start to the season this term and faced competition for a first team place from Andre-Pierre Gignac but made nine appearances, scoring one goal.

West Brom had previously moved for the forward last summer when Steve Clarke was in charge, who was successful in bringing Ayew’s team-mate Morgan Amalfitano to the Hawthorns.

Both Everton and Stoke City were also said to be interested in Ayew but the player has decided to stay in France for the time being.
