Winter break shock for Asamoah Gyan

Steve Bruce has postponed a winter break for Sunderland record buy Asamoah Gyan, the Mirror reports on Friday.

The Ghana striker was due to jet home on Thursday after being excused from the FA Cup tie against League One Notts County this weekend.

But Sunderland’s injury crisis has stretched their squad to breaking point with Danny Welbeck doubtful for the trip because of a hamstring injury, David Meyler out long term once more and Bolo Zenden suspended.

Gyan actually thought the Premier League stopped in the winter for a mid-season break and asked boss Bruce a few weeks ago when it started!

He was astonished to discover the number of games actually increases in England at this time of year, but Bruce said he could go and see his family in Africa anyway after missing them over Christmas.

Gyan will not be required to play against County and may still be allowed home for four days, starting on Sunday
