Former Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate says Ben Gibson deserves his England call.
Gibson received the call on Friday and is set to meet up with his England teammates on Saturday morning as the Three Lions get ready for their World Cup qualifier against Lithuania on Sunday.
“I'm really pleased for him," said Woodgate to Boro's website. “He's a lad who works really hard and he deserves it.
“There's good competition in that area for centre-halves at the minute and Ben is right in there with a shout.
“My message would be to enjoy it. The best thing you can do is to play for your country.
“I know it's a qualifier but he'll be involved down there and first impressions count.
“He knows Gareth and I'm sure he will make good impressions on everyone then keep on getting in the rest of the squads."
