Zambia coach relishing another AFCON battle against Ghana

Published on: 21 December 2012

Zambia coach Herve Renard hopes to meet Ghana at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations to enhance his team’s chances of progression.

Playing against the Chipolopolo have been unfavourable for the Black Stars in recent games.

Ghana has lost twice in the last two games between the sides – first at the semi final stage of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and then in the preliminary 2014 World Cup qualifier.

And Zambia’s French trainer who was once an assistant coach of the Black Stars wants another rematch fully convinced his side will reign supreme again.

“At the moment there is the African Cup of Nations and I hope once again to meet again Ghana because it will mean we will go far,” he told

Renard however admits subsequent games between the sides will only get tougher especially with the return encounter of the World Cup qualifier to be played in Ghana.

“It will be more difficult (playing Ghana) because the next game (2014 World Cup qualifier) will be in Ghana,” he adds.

“That means we just have to be strong. We know it will be very difficult to play in Ghana especially with this last game going to be very important.”

The African champions in Group C are unlikely to meet Ghana housed in Group B until the grand finale if both teams manage to make it that far in South Africa.

People talk too much. It's tactics that will win, mixed with good organisation and hungry players. All these so called mind games by Zambia or Ivory Coast are all bull. We got through to the final in 2010 lost to IVC in the Group and still gave Egypt the best African team of the past decade a hard game....all with kids and one or two experience players. Tactics and hunger will win it...let us see if we have this in January and forget the bull coming from other teams.

Naija must ask each other why they never qualified for AFCON 2012.Dont be proud, Zambia is a very strong but decieving team. Underate them at your own peril. Remember even when Naija beat Zambia in 1994,it was second hurriedly assembled team after the Gabon disaster.Look at their preparations for AFCON always secretive and using developmentalteams. Mark my word Zambia are a dangerous team

Ivory Coast has produced lethal striker in this year. Talk about Wilfred Boni and Traore of anzi. Didier Drogba has enough back up. When you talk about midfielders, they are overflowing with talents and stars. Whosoever claims that their team is overages is not following modern soccer.

@Kwame Pito every team that plays South Africa in the Mandela Cup signs an Agreement to bring the best players for this game. Hence Zambia had to bring their best for this game.In 2011 C.I played South Africa in the Mandela Challenge. They also had to sign the same agreement and the came with all their best players Yaya,Gervinho,Gosso.... D.Drogba missed the game cos of injury. The game was a 1-1 draw.

ALL WE NEED TO WIN THE AFCON ONE TOUCH IS FOR AKWASI APPIAH AND THE COACHING STAFF TO SELECT A FIRST 11 AS SOON AS CAMPING BEGINS AND MATCH THEM AGAINST THE RESERVES AND OTHER FRIENDLIES TO BUILD TEAM UNDERSTANDING. we have quality but when we play a game too many wrong passes and frustration because our quality players cannot read each other quick enough. look at a mesdiocre team like zambia who won AFCON based on team understanding alone and less quality They even played southafrica friendly with their first 11 but We we testing reserve players. That is enough, we need to workon that.

This coach has absolutely no respect for Ghana, due to all the cheap coaches GFA kept on employing. Oh Ghana dab3n? First it was Yaya Toure and now this Zambian gaffer.

The only Ghanaian player CIV is scared to meet is Quincy Owusu Abeyie. He is the only player easily opened their defense and score a spectacular goal. Somebody should to talk sense into Akwasi Appiah to alter his squad NOW, it's not too late to call Warris, Jordan, Quincy, John Mensah and Muntari. We are not going to forgive him and Nyantakyi if Ghana fails to impress at AFCON

Thus true GHANAFUO THINK BIG, they pack up to 7 players in and around their box anytime we are in midfield. You should see the goal the conceded against Uganda. They would never concede against us. The first they won against us was fate. The second was because of appiah's tactics. This time our players have no excuse loosing to Zambia
