Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice as Real Madrid earned a 4-2 victory over Athletic Bilbao.

Ronaldo gave the Merengues a dream start by netting a stunning goal inside three minutes but Javier Eraso levelled in the 10th minute after pouncing on an error by Raphael Varane, who was sent off late in the game for picking up two bookings.

James Rodriguez put the hosts ahead again with a curled finish after 37 minutes and Toni Kroos added to the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Ronaldo notched his second goal in the closing minutes, before Gorka Elustondo got a consolation for Athletic.

Real coach Zinedine Zidane said: "We are ready for the game on Wednesday in Rome. We are doing well in terms of fitness and play. I am happy with what we did against very good opponents. The important thing for us is to perform at our top level and win games. Over 90 minutes there are always difficult moments. I am more or less happy with all of our games.

"We are always going to have errors, I am not worried about that. The good thing is that in the end we won. We faced a difficult opponent and we knew it. In football you are not always going to have control of chances and the ball. You have to try and make the smallest number of errors. With their first goal, Rafa (Varane) wanted to play it to Keylor. That is football and these things can happen."
