Zlatan Ibrahimovic has played last Man United game, leaving for MLS -- sources

Published on: 22 March 2018

Hear how Zlatan Ibrahimovic predicted a move to MLS might happen back in August 2017. Former LA Galaxy forward Herculez Gomez reacts to ESPN's report the club are nearing a deal to bring in Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2018. Herculez Gomez and Alejandro Moreno predict who will win MLS Cup in 2018 and assess how Zlatan Ibrahimovic could impact the league if he joins LA Galaxy. LA Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid joins Max Bretos in the Heineken Boot Room to discuss the possibility of coaching Zlatan Ibrahimovic, what he would do as USMNT coach and more.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has played his last game for Manchester United, with sources telling ESPN FC that he is close to sealing a move to Major League Soccer.

Ibrahimovic will join the LA Galaxy with targeted allocation money and not as a designated player, sources said. The Los Angeles Times reported later on Thursday that Ibrahimovic has signed his contract to join the Galaxy.

The 36-year-old, who joined United from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in 2016, has not played since aggravating a knee injury against Burnley on Dec. 26.

And with less than four months remaining on his Old Trafford contract, sources have told ESPN FC that United manager Jose Mourinho has allowed Ibrahimovic to leave now in order to move to MLS.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's appearance against Burnley on Dec. 26 was his last for Manchester United.

ESPN reported in January that the Galaxy were inching closer to signing the striker, and sources confirmed on Thursday that Los Angeles is still the destination for the Swede, who is determined to continue his career after returning from a serious knee injury at United earlier this season.

Ibrahimovic scored 29 goals in 53 appearances for United, including two in the EFL Cup final win against Southampton last season.

However, United's £90 million purchase of Romelu Lukaku last summer pushed Ibrahimovic to the sidelines at Old Trafford, and he is now set to call time on his Premier League career, with an announcement on his future expected before the end of the week.

Despite ending his international career for Sweden in 2016, Ibrahimovic said earlier this month that he has not ruled out returning to play at the World Cup in Russia this summer.
