Dubai: Zoran Mamic has been named as the new head coach of AFC Champions League 2016 runners-up Al Ain ahead of the start of this season’s edition of Asia’s premier club competition.

The 45-year-old Croatian, who replaces former incumbent Zlatko Dalic, left Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr last week and has now signed a reported 18-month deal with the 12-time United Arab Emirates top-flight winners.

A former international defender, Mamic guided Dinamo Zagreb to three league title successes in Croatia before taking the reins at Al Nassr in 2016.

Mamic’s first task will be to haul back current UAE Pro League leaders Al Jazira who currently lead second-placed Al Ain by seven points.

He will also oversee Al Ain’s latest AFC Champions League campaign which is set to get underway with a Group C fixture against Zobahan from the Islamic Republic of Iran on February 21.
