2012 AFCON 38 goals short of tournament scoring record

Published on: 03 February 2012

The 2012 Nations Cup is 38 goals shy of equaling the all-time best scoring record of the tournament set in the 2008 edition hosted by Ghana.

61 goals have been recorded after the preliminary round of group matches which spanned 11 days.

Official statistics by Caf has confirmed that an average 2.5 goals per game including an astonishing 6-1 scoreline in the Guinea versus Botswana game has been recorded so far ahead of the quarter-final matches which begin on Saturday.

And with eight matches left to go, its highly unlikely the record of 99 goals will be broken especially with the tournament expected to get even more cagier as teams tighten their defence for the knockout rounds.

Also statistics have confirmed that Ghana are a goal away from their 100th in the Nations Cup history.
