2021 AFCON: Big blow for Egypt as defender Ahmed Hegazi is ruled out of tournament with injury

Egypt have been handed a big blow as their trusted centre-back Ahmed Hegazi will miss the remainder of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury.

Hegazi sustained an adductor muscle strain in Egypt’s quarter-final victory against Morocco last Sunday.

The former West Brom centre-back was replaced at half-time by Mahmoud Trezeguet who scored the winning goal as Egypt secured a 2-1 win over their North African rivals.

The 31-year-old will fly to Germany to receive treatment.

Seven-time winners Egypt face hosts Cameroon in their semi-final on Thursday for a place in the final on February 6.
