2021 Africa Cup of Nations: Morocco beat stubborn Malawi in last 16

Morocco booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday evening following a come from behind win against a stubborn Malawi side.

The Atlas Lions won 2-1 - their first Afcon knockout victory since 2004.

Malawi, playing their first knockout match, stunned Morocco when they took the lead in the 7th minute after Gabadinho Mhangho exceptional strike.

But Morocco incessant pressure paid off as they grabbed the equaliser through Youssef En-Nesyri who headed home from close range seconds before halftime.

Morocco were on top after the break. The North Africans felt they should have had a penalty when the ball struck the trailing hand of Malawi defender Dennis Chembezi, but after a VAR check their appeals were waved away.

Minutes later, they were awarded a free kick which PSG right-back Achraf Hakimi curled over the wall and into the near top corner.

The sensational striker turned out to be the winner as Morocco march on in the competition many have tipped them to win.

In the last edition, they fell fo Benin in the last 16, losing on penalties. They have past that stage this year and are three wins away from their first African crown since 1976.

Morocco will play either Ivory Coast or Egypt in the quarter-finals.
