Many label the CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) as Africa’s second biggest interclub competition after the CAF Champions League (CAFCL) however with regards to excitement and action the CAFCC never fails to disappoint.

18 matches were scheduled to take place however Botswana side Security Systems FC withdrew from their game against St. Eloi Lupopo (DR Congo) giving the Congolese side automatic qualification to the next round.

Inter Litoral Academy (Equatorial Guinea) also failed to show up for the game against St Michel United FC in Seychelles which sums up some of the difficulties these teams have in travelling around the continent both financially and logistically.

Hearts of Oak, Ghana’s representative in the competition has been given automatic qualification to the second round based on the clubs seeding in this year’s competition and they will await the winner of Douanes (Burkina Faso) and Real Bamako (Mali) which has been postponed and the first leg will be played tomorrow with the second leg following on Saturday.

Faisal Kenema (Ethiopia), Kwara United (Nigeria) and Al Akhdar (Libya) all managed comfortable 3-0 home wins against Bumamuru (Burundi), Douanes Niamey (Niger) and Al Ahli Khartoum (Sudan) respectively giving themselves a big advantage ahead of the second leg.

Remo Stars (Nigeria) fought well in Morocco to earn a 1-1 draw against AS Far who were tipped to beat the Nigerian team however Remo Stars surprised the hosts with a solid performance in their first ever game in the competition.

Another debutant Hilal Al Sahel (Sudan) managed their first ever win in the competition beating Geita Gold (Tanzania) 1-0 who are also participating for the first time.

Ferroviario de Beira (Mozambique) and Kallon (Sierra Leone) were the only two teams to win away from home as Ferroviaro beat AS Sante d’Abeche (Chad) 1-2 and Kallon beat Buffles du Borgou (Benin) 0-1 easing the task of qualifying to the next round.

A lot of football is still to be played and many ties are in the balance with teams looking to take once step closer to making the group stages of the competition also known as the ‘money making zone’.
