2022 World Cup: Ghana coach Otto Addo edges close to final squad for global tournament

Published on: 06 September 2022

Ghana coach Otto Addo is getting closer to finalizing his squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Borussia Dortmund coach, who has been in charge of the Black Stars since March, has called up 29 players for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Nicaragua, and he will use the matches to assess them and make a decision moving forward.

The squad includes many regulars such as Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, Baba Rahman, and Thomas Partey, but some names, particularly Joseph Paintsil, who has been in excellent form in Belgium, are conspicuously absent.

Inaki Williams, Mohammed Salisu, Tariq Lamptey, Stephan Ambrosius, and Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer, who all declared their intention to play for Ghana in June, have been included in the squad.

The players in the latest squad have a good chance of making Addo's World Cup squad, while those who were not called up have a slim chance of being in Qatar.

Following FIFA's decision to extend football's relaxation of rules that help coaches and players during the COVID-19 pandemic, Addo can name 26 players for the global showpiece. Coaches could previously name up to 23 players for World Cup.

Addo and his technical team members, including George Boateng, Didi Dramani, and former Premier League manager Chris Hughton, have been tasked with selecting the best players available to Ghana, and they must do so in order for the Black Stars to excel in Qatar.

Ghana will play Brazil at Stade Oceane in Le Harve, France on Friday, September 23, 2022, before facing Nicaragua at Estadio Francisco Artes Carrasco in Lorca, Spain on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

Both games are part of the team's preparations for the World Cup, which begins on November 20.

Ghana will face Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay in the group stage.
