2022 World Cup: Ghana’s group opponent South Korea lost only one match in qualifiers

Published on: 04 April 2022

South Korea are the underdogs in Group H of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but they have what it takes to pull off a surprise in Qatar.

The Asians are in the same group as Portugal, Uruguay, and Africa's four-time champions. Many people expect Portugal to win the group, with Ghana and Uruguay vying for second place.

The Koreans, on the other hand, should not be overlooked. This will be their 11th outing, and they have previously performed admirably.

In 2018, they were eliminated in the first round, but they caused one of the tournament's major upsets by defeating then-reigning champions Germany.

So far, their best result was in 2002, when they finished fourth in a tournament co-hosted with Japan.

The experienced Paulo Bento, who has won league titles in Portugal and Greece, will be in the dugout for South Korea. The former Portuguese player led Portugal to the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

They qualified for Qatar with an excellent record of 12 wins, 3 draws, and one loss in a total of 16 games.

South Korea should not be overlooked because they have quality in their ranks, with captain Son Heung-min being one of Europe's most prolific scorers.

The Tottenham forward has 14 goals in 27 Premier League games. He has also set up six goals.

South Korea's opening game will be against Uruguay. In 2010, they met in the round of 16 in South Africa, with the South Americans defeating the Asians 2-1 thanks to a brace by Luis Suarez.

They will then face Ghana before ending their group stage campaign against the former European champions.
