2022 World Cup: Otto Addo sets new record with Ghana Black Stars

Otto Addo has become the first man to play at the World Cup and coach the Black Stars to the global showpiece.

The German-born trainer represented Ghana at the World Cup in 2006 as the Black Stars reach the round of 16 before taking over as interim coach for the playoff against Nigeria.

The Borussia Dortmund talent developer masterminded the downfall of a star studded Nigeria team as Ghana secured one of the tickets to the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Having been made interim coach, the ex-Dortmund player marshalled the best squad the team can present following the absence of some key personnel including captain Andre Ayew.

A strong display in Kumasi at the Baba Yara sports stadium saw the Black Stars mute forwards Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Ihenacho.

And with the stakes high and it looked like over for Ghana as the team travelled to a 60,000 packed capacity Moshood Abiola stadium to secure a 1-1 draw. The draw saw Ghana qualify and Otto Addo make history.

Thomas Partey scored for the Black Stars in the opening minutes of the game before Nigeria were awarded a controversial penalty after Ademola Lookman was adjudged to have been fouled by Dennis Odoi.

Captain Trost Ekong scored from the spot-kick to get the equalizer from the Super Eagles.

Napoli striker Victor Oshimen scored again for the home side but the goal was ruled out by the VAR for offside.

The Black Stars held the Nigerians to a 1-1 draw to secure passage to the World Cup to be staged in Qatar.
