Just before half time, Joseph Amoah's cross into the box hit the hand of Richard Agyen with the referee rewarding a penalty, which was converted by captain Akoto.
Midfielder Lawrence Setirdjie almost scored from a corner kick before Lions got another set piece at the stroke of half time. The diminutive midfielder swung a cross into the box which was pounced into the net by Hamzata.
After the break, Lions had a golden opportunity to add another to their tally but Derrick Owusu could not convert into a gaping net.
Nwafor and Yao Sokpoli came close for Lions halfway through the second half but it was a heroic save from Afful in the final minutes that earned the host an important victory.
