Dhaka: Bangladesh held firm to hold Laos 0-0 in the second leg of their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification tie on Tuesday, with the South Asians advancing 1-0 on aggregate.

Bangladesh, needing just a draw to qualify, started defensively as the onus was on the visitors to up the ante but they looked overawed by the enormity of the occasion and failed to produce enough chances.

The hosts did come close twice but Nabib Newaz Jibon failed to put both chances away.

On the other hand, despite their best efforts, Laos couldn’t break the stalemate and at the end of the first half, Bangladesh still had their noses in front.

The opening minutes of the second half saw Bangladesh going on the offensive as Mohammad Ibrahim, who had come on for Biplu Ahmed, crossed the ball to Jibon who only had the goalkeeper to beat but shot wide.

Bangladesh coach Jamie Day sent on fresh legs as Laos’ began to tire.

However, the changes didn’t add much to the pace of the game which petered out to a draw as Bangladesh advanced to the next round of the Asian Qualifiers.
