Genoa striker Goran Pandev has confirmed that he will quit football at the end of the season.
The 39-year-old has played 484 games in Serie A, scoring 101 goals, but this will be his last season as a footballer.
“I will stop in June,” the North Macedonia star told Il Corriere dello Sport.
“I want to gain Serie A survival with Genoa, I can’t quit without completing our mission.”
Tomorrow, his Genoa side face José Mourinho’s Roma. The Special One coached Pandev at Inter when the Nerazzurri won the treble in 2009-10. It will be Andriy Shevchenko’s first game in charge at Genoa.
“It’s an important signal from ambitious owners,” Pandev said, commenting on the appointment of the former Milan striker.
“I don’t want to discuss Davide Ballardini’s sacking, but Shevchenko obtained great results as Ukraine coach, we couldn’t hope for anything better.
“He is telling me to do what I can do and help the youths. As a leader, he wanted to know every player in the team, more than 30 players. It’s not easy to make everyone feel important.”
How about Mourinho?
“He is the man who changed my perspectives, he asked me to join Inter six months after the end of my time at Lazio. I thought it was a dream, and you all know how it ended.”
