A Brief Biography Of Black Stars Coach CK Akonnor

Nicknamed CK, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, is a former football player and the current coach of the Ghanaian Black stars.

Born in 1974, the former Black Star player aims to make Ghanaian football great again, currently ranking as one of the brightest young soccer coaches in Africa.

At 46 years, CK also holds a record of coaching all leading clubs in the Ghanaian Premier league.

Player Career

Like many great soccer players in the world, CK Akonnor took an interest in football at an early age. During his school days, young CK was an integral part of the school team. He represented the school in different Inter-college games and junior competitions before Obuasi Goldfields spotted his talent and helped him pursue a career in it.

During his playing days, Akonnor was known as an excellent unifier who helped to accelerate team goals. This strong character helped him to achieve a lot on the field, taking his career even higher after his school days. His professional career took off at a very young age, graduating from the Tema Colts to join the former Ghana Premier League giants, Okwahu United.

After joining Okwahu in 1988, Akonnor later left for Obuasi Goldfields in 1992. That move would soon result in an international career, as he only lasted for a single season, before joining the German side Fortuna Koln for a five-year run. Five years after joining Koln, Akonnor was welcomed by German giants, Wolfsburg – also available on Betway’s offerings. While with Wolfsburg, Akonnor helped his team to claim the UEFA Cup in 2000, during his first year as the team captain. At the time, he also doubled as the Ghana Black Stars captain.

Coaching Career

Following his career as a well-organized team player, Akonnor transitioned into coaching soon after retiring from the Danish side AC Horsens in 2006. The former Black Stars players started his career as head coach for Sekondi 11 Wise in 2009, before becoming the team’s sports director in 2011. Even better, Akonnor coached the Right to Dream under 17 Academy in 2010.

As a detail-oriented man, Akonnor has proven that he can perfectly handle multiple tasks simultaneously throughout his decade-long career. Looking at his achievements, you can easily tell that he’s a perfectionist who fears less when it comes to taking risks.

The current Black Stars coach holds a Coaching License A from CAF and License B and C from UEFA. He also has coaching attachments in Celtic in 2015, Manchester City in 2010, Numberg in 2010, Wolfsburg in 2012, and Tottenham in 2017.

Coaching Achievements

During his coaching career, CK Akonnor has claimed many accolades, including a coach of the year award during the 2018/2019 Ghana Football Awards. During the same year, he also helped Asante Kitoko to book a spot for the CAF Champions League. He was also the first coach in Asante Kitoko to bag three out of four games in the CAF Interclub games after 27 years.
