A Spanish flavour to the goalscorers in LaLiga Santander 2018/19

Published on: 27 May 2019

One of the standout Spain-born players this season in front of goal has been Iago Aspas. The Principe das Bateas ('Prince of the Boats' in Galician) has led the way for RC Celta and tops the charts for Spanish goalscorers in the top flight. The forward is fourth in the standings with 20 goals, which is further proof of what a fine player he is, not to mention the fact that Aspas has now been the top scoring Spanish player for three consecutive campaigns, with 19 in 2016/17, 22 in 2017/18 and 20 in 2018/19.

1 Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona) 36

2 Karim Benzema (Real Madrid) 21

2 Luis Suarez (FC Barcelona) 21

4 Iago Aspas (RC Celta) 20

5 Cristhian Stuani (Girona FC) 19

6 Wissam Ben Yedder (Sevilla FC) 18

7 Borja Iglesias (RCD Espanyol) 17

8 Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid) 15

9 Charles (SD Eibar) 14

9 Jaime Mata (Getafe CF) 14

9 Jorge Molina (Getafe CF) 14

9 Raul de Tomas (Rayo Vallecano) 14

The Celta number 10 is only the second Spaniard to have scored 20 or more goals in back-to-back LaLiga campaigns in the 21st century (22 in 2017/18 and 20 in 2018/19), after David Villa achieved the same feat in 2008/09 (28) and 2009/10 (21).

Aspas may have racked up the most impressive statistics, but others have shone as well, such as Jaime Mata, Angel and Jorge Molina. The trio have performed brilliantly for Getafe and are responsible for 36 of the club's 48 league goals during the campaign.

Others have scored goals that have been noteworthy due to how early on they were, such as:

00:13 Juanmi Real Sociedad - Eibar

00:18 Borja Iglesias Espanyol - Real Valladolid

00:29 Alvaro Medran Rayo Vallecano - Real Valladolid

00:42 Raul Garcia Athletic Club - Eibar

01:12 Iñaki Williams Athletic Club - Rayo Vallecano

We finish up by taking a look at some rising starlets. They may be young, but Sergio Camello (Atletico), Bryan Gil (Sevilla) and Ander Barrenetxea (Real Sociedad) all have the quality to stay just where they are. The Spanish trio make up a select group of LaLiga Santander goalscorers who were born in the 21st century and they all came through the academies at their respective clubs.
