Aaron Opoku: Ghanaian forward's Hamburger SV departure in danger following red card

Published on: 24 August 2022

Hamburger SV are said to be struggling to transfer Ghanaian attacker Aaron Opoku as a result of his bizarre red card.

Opoku was sent off in Hamburger SV's 2-1 defeat to Darmstadt last weekend. Opoku kicked one of his opponents in the stomach.

Opoku, born in Germany, started the game on the bench and was brought on in the second half in the hopes of changing the game.

However, he was only on the field for eight minutes before being sent off in a cynical fashion.

Fabian Holland grabbed Opoku's shorts and prevented him from joining the attack in a desperate attempt to break up the counter.

After failing to shake off Holland, the 23-year-old retaliated by booting his opponent in the stomach.

Prior to the game, it was agreed that the attacker would leave the German second-tier club, but the sending-off has complicated the transfer.

Opoku is expected to be suspended for six to eight games, with a return to action in October. Of course, this puts pressure on HSV's asking price for the 23-year-old.

Hamburger SV will almost certainly have to find creative solutions in the form of higher bonuses or possible resale participation. Opoku is said to have interest from 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Eintracht Braunschweig - though this was before his assault.
