Ghana legend Abedi Pele is confident his son Andre Ayew can cap an incredible season by helping his country clinch the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 30-years.

The performance of the Olympic Marseille winger has soared over the past two years and continues to thrill fans with sublime display in the French Ligue 1.

The 22-year-old was voted the BBC African Footballer of the year last Friday to follow in the footsteps of his father who clinched the inaugural award in 1991.

Ayew guided Ghana's Under-20 team to win Africa’s first ever Fifa World Youth title in Egypt 2009.

Abedi Pele is optimistic that his second son can weave his magic at the finals to be co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

"It’s always difficult going into such tournaments but I hope he can continue with his fine form and help the country win the title," the three-time African Footballer of the Year said.

"He's still very young and blend of such talents coupled with the experience of the other key players in the team can go a long way to help us."

He added that: "We know it is going to be tough but nothing can be guaranteed but with the crop of players we have at disposal, we're one of the favourites to win the title."

Andre Ayew is expected to be handed the famous number 10 jersey at the biannual showpiece after Kwadwo Asamoah requested for a change of jersey number.

His father won the number 10 jersey for many years for the Black Stars.
