AC Milan defender calm despite lack of first team action

AC Milan central defender Mattia Caldara insists his lack of first-team opportunities stems from the time required to adjust to playing in a four-man defence.

The 24-year-old joined Milan at the beginning of August where he has been limited to brief appearances off the bench in friendly matches.

Speaking to Mediaset the former Atalanta and Juventus defender quashed talk of being excluded from the team, claiming “getting used to a four-man defence is not easy.”

“The methods used here are different to those I found in Bergamo, I am trying my hardest to adapt and to be of service to [Gennaro] Gattuso.

“A lot of this has revolved around discipline, knowing when to break the line and when to play the offside trap. I speak a lot with Gattuso and our relationship is good,” he concluded.

Caldara was in action for the Azzurri alongside his club teammate Alessio Romagnoli during a 1-0 defeat to their UEFA Nations League opponents Portugal.
